Quarantine Reading List? Yes, Please!

While Covid-19 quarantines have opened the door for people to open the books, I haven’t really found myself able to read freely yet. This is because of all my school work, I’m a senior in college doing online classes (which I’m mad about, because these courses were in person before the pandemic)! So, get this, I’ve been reading 70 pages of “Kindred” by Octavia E. Butler every other day, and I resent the book for it! My U.S. Literature course has made me gain a grievance toward U.S. Literature. But, to be honest, it’s just not my genre. I like the time travel element, but I prefer when The Flash time travels. I like when Booster Gold and RIP Hunter are protecting the timeline! I love comic book time travel, but this book I just read had more realism than I asked for. And then, the  t e s t s  to make sure I actually read the 70 pages. I resent this book because of the tests, I really do.

Anyway, I haven’t been reading too much because of my school work, but I’m less than a week away from summer and building my summer reading list—most of them are comic books, which I find great value in, as well as a decent escapism. Over my winter break I read over 80 comics. That was about a month’s time. 80 comics. Most were like New 52 Aquaman comics. I finished a whole Aquaman book while I was in the waiting room for the E.R. and was on my second Aquaman book by the time they took me into the E.R. (pancreatitis. What you are you gonna do?) And I wanted to keep up that trend when my spring break happened. I read about half of my Final Crisis omnibus, which is 1,500+ pages. I’m currently almost ¾ through the book and it is a major accomplishment! But now that summer is a week away, I have to decide what I’m going to read!

Over winter break I also read about the entire Bat family following Batman’s death in Final Crisis. Which essentially means I read Batman & Robin, The Return of Bruce Wayne, and Time Masters: The Vanishing Point, which was from 2009-2010. So, now I decide if I want to pursue that timeline of stories to 2011, which was when they ended. I think I may. I think I’m doing Brightest Day (2010-2011), which was a huge event in comics following the Blackest Night event in 2010. I’ve already read a substantial amount of Brightest Day, so I’d have no trouble jumping into that. I also want to do The Outsiders from 2003-2007 follow that with Geoff Johns’ run on Teen Titans and then Titans. We’ll see.

Unfortunately, I recently read Crisis on Infinite Earths, which kind of rebooted the DC Universe in 1986 and I’m following the continuity from there to 2011. I feel like I need to earn the comics from the 2000s because they make references to older comics. I want to have full context when I’m reading! I want the whole adventure! I might do some New-Earth Green Arrow comics from 1986. We’ll see! I’ll keep everyone updated.

Has anyone else built their quarantine reading list? If so, I’d love to see it!
